Let's be honest: Malta isn't Greece when it comes to beaches. There aren't that many, they're often rocky, and some get seriously packed in July. But the good ones are really, truly good. With the right intel, you can skip the tourist traps and find genuinely stunning spots.
We've covered the whole island — Gozo and Comino included — to give you an honest ranking of Malta's best beaches in 2026, with tips and alternatives for when things get too busy.
🥇 Blue Lagoon (Comino) — The undisputed champion
Start with the unmissable. Comino's Blue Lagoon is without question the most spectacular beach spot in the Maltese archipelago. Waters of an almost unreal turquoise, shallow, warm and crystal clear. The kind of scenery that looks photoshopped — but genuinely isn't.
The catch: everyone knows it. In July–August, the Blue Lagoon can get very crowded. Our advice: go in the late afternoon (4pm–8pm) when the morning groups are heading back, or take the catamaran which anchors in the bay without landing on the island.
🌅 Blue Lagoon Ferry — 4pm–8pm slot
Fewer crowds, sunset views, warm water — €35/person
🏖️ Golden Bay — The sandy beach benchmark
If the Blue Lagoon is queen of turquoise water, Golden Bay is the sandy beach benchmark in Malta. Located in the northwest, it lives up to its name: a crescent of golden sand framed by reddish cliffs, with calm shallow water. Great for families, relaxed sunbathing and beginners at paddleboarding.
- Access: bus 223 from Valletta, or car (paid parking)
- Water: calm, great for kids and beginners
- Services: sunbed rental (~€8/day), snack bars, showers
- Best time: before 10am or after 5pm in high season
🌿 Ghajn Tuffieha — The wild one
A 15-minute walk from Golden Bay lies Ghajn Tuffieha (pronounced roughly "ain-tuffeha"). This is the locals' favourite — less infrastructure, more nature. Getting there requires climbing down (and back up) around 200 steps, which puts off many tourists and keeps the beach far less crowded than Golden Bay. The sand here is more red-orange, the sea slightly choppier. Brilliant for snorkelling.
🏊 Mellieha Bay — Malta's biggest beach
Mellieha Bay (also called Ghadira) is technically Malta's largest sandy beach. It's also one of the most popular — it can hold thousands of people at once, which makes July weekends feel chaotic. Its strengths: very shallow water perfect for children, full amenities (equipment rental, restaurants, parking), and lovely views towards Gozo. Not the wildest, but practical and pleasant.
📸 St Peter's Pool — The locals' secret
Not a sandy beach — something better. St Peter's Pool is a natural rock pool carved into limestone cliffs near Marsaxlokk in southern Malta. Immaculate flat rocks, deep blue water, waves crashing into nearby caves. One of Malta's most photographed spots, yet surprisingly unknown to mainstream tourists. No amenities, no sunbeds, no vendors — just raw nature.
🌊 Gozo's beaches — Next level
🏖️ Ramla Bay — The red sand beach
Gozo's most beautiful sandy beach, with uniquely red-orange sand. Surrounded by green hills and vineyards, it's a landscape unlike anything else in Malta. Perfect for a half-day during a Gozo excursion.
🏊 Dwejra / Inland Sea — The adventurer's beach
Not technically a beach, but an interior body of water connected to the sea through a natural tunnel. Fishing boats pass through this tunnel to reach the open sea — you can even hire a small boat and head out through this stunning passage. Unique in the world.
🏍️ Gozo Quad Tour — Full day trip
Ramla Bay + Inland Sea + Blue Lagoon · Transport included · €115 solo / €195 duo
🧠 Practical beach tips for Malta
- Arrive early or late — between 10am and 3pm in July–August, the best beaches are packed
- Biodegradable sunscreen recommended, especially at the Blue Lagoon (protected area)
- Water shoes useful for rocky spots (St Peter's Pool, Ghajn Tuffieha)
- Bring water — beach snacks and drinks are overpriced
- Comino visitor pass — mandatory since May 2025, included in all official excursions
